Pros of using open source software in digital libraries:

Cost. Open source software is free, commercial software can be expensive.
Open digital formats. Data is typically stored in open digital formats. Users are not locked in to a single proprietary format that may be more restrictive.
Support from the user/developer community. Users and developers within the community often are willing to help when problems arise, (through discussion forums, responses to users queries, etc.).
From the developer’s perspective, developers can reuse open source software, saving considerable effort.
Software is often very robust, since members of the community actively contribute to improving it.
If you want to make improvements on the software, you can.

Cons of open source software:

Implementation of the software may require considerable effort and time on the part of the user.
Documentation is not always very complete.
There may not be good hardware support for open source software.

What is XML-RPC and what is it used for?

XML-RPC is a specification and set of implementations that allow software on different computers to make procedure calls over the internet. XML stands for “extensible markup language” and RPC for “remote procedure call”. Each time a computer program makes a “procedure call,” it passes parameters and returns values in order to accomplish the work of the program. A “remote” procedure call occurs when one program calls a procedure in another program. In order for one program to make a remote procedure call of another program, the two programs must share a common format in which to talk. In the case of XML-RPC, that format is XML. XML is a computer language which is relatively close to natural language, making it fairly easy to understand. RPC is of value in part because it allows users to integrate programs on their own, replacing various components with each other. XML-RPC is remote procedure calling using HTTP as the transport and XML as the encoding. Blogging clients such as ecto use XML-RPC.
